Intent

Pupils use their creativity and imagination to design and make products in a range of contexts. They draw on the disciplines of other subjects such as mathematics, science, computer and art. Pupils become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. They evaluate designers and existing products to inspire them to create their own ideas and designs.

It is important that children design, plan, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. With this in mind, we have developed a progressive design process (designing, making, evaluating) that children work through when designing their products.  It is important that when designing the children are equipped with the necessary technical knowledge to allow them to make informed decision.

To ensure technical knowledge is retained, we have carefully planned what we want the children to learn and when we want them to learn it. The knowledge and skills that are taught are progressive across the primary phase (in partnership with Widcombe Infant School) and it makes links and connections within and outside of the subject domain. We aim, wherever possible, to link these studies and subsequent projects to other curriculum areas.

Cooking and nutrition is also taught within Design and Technology.
